At Archbishop Chapelle, we cherish our senior traditions. We recently hosted our Class of '26 soccer senior night at Muss Bertilino. It was an endless night with excitement and cheers as our soccer team defeated Riverdale 8-0. Senior Night is a memorable game to celebrate the seniors in their final season of playing for Archbishop Chapelle.
Our soccer chips started off really strongly in the game, winning 8-0 before halftime. Our senior, Darcy Garvey, received a penalty kick but gave it to our other senior, Gabriella Saia, so she could score a goal for the season. Gabriella Saia has been out for most of the season with multiple injuries. This actively demonstrates that at Chapelle, our athletic teams aren't just teammates playing one sport; they are a family. After Gabriella tried one last time, the game ended in the mercy rule. The mercy rule is in the possible event that the winning team’s score is 8-0 before halftime, and the game is called to an end. Our soccer chips did, in fact, reach this 8-0 goal leading to the result of a mercy rule. Giving the victory to the winning team, our chips! After the game, the team celebrated with a pizza party and gift baskets for our two seniors, Darcy Garvey and Gabrielle Saia.
Senior and Co-captain Gabriella Saia said, “My favorite memory of my time on this team was winning the district championship my freshman year. This was a truly memorable moment for me because I recall watching and realizing how much my team had grown and improved from the previous year. We went from a small team with hardly any wins to a team with strong bonds and the ability to work together and reach the finish line.” Senior captain Darcy Garvey said, “I would say just have fun and try out because you'll make most of your high school memories on the soccer team.”
Alayna Gillio, a classmate of Darcy Garvey and Gabriella Saia, watched the memorable game and said this, “ It was very sad to watch the seniors play on senior night. I kept thinking back to when they were 8th graders playing for the first time. I was also very happy for them, though, because they will be starting a new chapter in their lives.” Katelyn Gauthier, another one of the senior classmates, said this,” Watching my best friends play one of their last games was one of the best, but worst feelings I've ever felt. Their futures are so bright, and it proves that they are capable of much more than they think. I will definitely be missing these nights where I get to watch and appreciate my fellow seniors.”
Archbishop Chapelle’s student body loves to support our athletic teams, whether by showing up for games and cheering or by hosting pep rallies to support our players. Senior nights especially are important due to the fact that it is a time when students, friends, faculty, and families come together as a community to honor our athletes and all the hard work they have achieved. Taking everything into account, Archbishop Chapelle’s students, faculty, and friends had a great time supporting this important night for our seniors, Gabriella Saia and Darcy Garvey.
