In early January, our Hi-Steppers competed at the DTU Regional Championship at Hahnville High School, placing in every category they entered. After competing against some of the strongest teams in the region, the Hi-Steppers placed sixth in Large Varsity Jazz, first in Large Varsity Pom, fourth in Large Varsity Game Day, second in Varsity Open, and second in Varsity Officers. These placements clearly demonstrate the team’s discipline and improvement throughout the season.
The highlight of the day came in their Large Varsity Pom performance, where the Hi-Steppers secured first place and the regional championship title. This sharp, high-energy routine set them apart from their competition and helped solidify their spot at the top of the division.
For many team members, their success at regionals showed their personal growth and resilience. Rylee Ford ‘29 told us about how being on the team has helped shape her both on and off the floor, as well as how she’ll use these experiences at Nationals: “I have gained amazing friendships that radiate positivity, faith, and kindness. Working together as a team to accomplish everything we have has really shown me that, no matter what the outcome, we still support each other. All this has helped me build myself and my confidence up for Nationals. I know that as long as we work as a team and show what we have worked so hard for, we can do anything we set our minds to.”
When asked about her favorite routine, Elise Palm ‘29 said, “My favorite routine would have to be pom because it's very hype and high-energy, and really fun to perform. It took a lot of team effort to get it to where it is now, but it looks really good.” Clearly, the Pom routine captured the team’s personality and effort this season!
Our Hi-Steppers have dedicated themselves so much to their team, but behind the scenes, the coaches have watched the teams refine their early-season practices into their current polished performances! Mrs. Woodward, Hi-Stepper coach, was asked what the most rewarding part of coaching these girls was. This was her response: “The most rewarding part of coaching is that the girls love each other, and no matter who is performing on the court, they need each other. They rely on each other to push through a routine. So a member that is on the sideline cheering them on is just as important as the member performing the routine.” Our Hi-Steppers’ improvement has come to fruition in many ways, from their technique to their confidence, as Mrs. Woodward has seen firsthand. “Improvement is inevitable in dance. It is always amazing to see how a routine is developed from the first day of choreography to the day it is competed. This can also happen for individual members. Some catch on quickly while others need time.”
Although they’ve secured this win, our Hi-Steppers are far from over. With nationals ahead, they are entering the next phase with confidence in Lafayette for their state competition! They’ll also be heading to Florida in February for Nationals!
Congratulations, Hi-Steppers! We’re so proud of your dedication to the team and are excited to see what you’ll accomplish at Nationals!
