Welcome Chipmunks!

The summer reading program at Archbishop Chapelle High School is designed to cultivate student choice, faculty mentoring, and small group discussions as well as promote a culture of reading among students, faculty, and staff. After reading their books over the summer, students will participate in "book club" style meetings with other students and faculty members who read the same book.

Expectations for Students

Students who will be in 9th-12th grades next school year will choose a book from the provided list, read it over the summer, and then engage in a small group discussion facilitated by a faculty or staff member at the start of the school year. We expect all students to be active contributors to these discussions. Also, each student is required to have a print/paper copy of the chosen book with her at the book discussion in August, and a student may not select a book she has read in a previous year.

Expectations for Parents

Parents should be a part of the book selection process so that all family members are comfortable and excited about the chosen title.

At the heart of Frankl’s theory of logotherapy (from the Greek word for “meaning”) is a conviction that the primary human drive is not pleasure, as Freud maintained, but rather the discovery and pursuit of what the individual finds meaningful. Today, as new generations face new challenges and an ever more complex and uncertain world, Frankl’s classic work continues to inspire us all to find significance in the very act of living, in spite of all obstacles.

  • Grit

Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance by Angela Duckworth

"Pioneering psychologist Angela Duckworth shows anyone striving to succeed—be it parents, students, educators, athletes, or business people—that the secret to outstanding achievement is not talent but a special blend of passion and persistence she calls “grit.” Drawing on her own powerful story as the daughter of a scientist who frequently noted her lack of “genius,” Duckworth, now a celebrated researcher and professor, describes her early eye-opening stints in teaching, business consulting, and neuroscience, which led to the hypothesis that what really drives success is not “genius” but a unique combination of passion and long-term perseverance. In Grit, she takes readers into the field to visit cadets struggling through their first days at West Point, teachers working in some of the toughest schools, and young finalists in the National Spelling Bee. She also mines fascinating insights from history and shows what can be gleaned from modern experiments in peak performance. Finally, she shares what she’s learned from interviewing dozens of high achievers—from JP Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon to New Yorker cartoon editor Bob Mankoff to Seattle Seahawks Coach Pete Carroll. Winningly personal, insightful, and even life-changing, Grit is an inspiring self-improvement book about overcoming obstacles and what goes through your head when you fall down, and how that—not talent or luck—makes all the difference.

  • The Jewelers Shop

The Jewelers Shop by Karol Wojtyla (Pope John Paul II)

Love is "one of the greatest dramas of human existence," writes Pope John Paul II. In this illuminating three-act play he explores relationships between men and women, the joys--and the pain--of love and marriage. The action unfolds in two settings at once: a street in a small town, outside the local jeweler's shop (people go to buy their wedding rings there), and the mysterious inner landscape of personal hopes and fears, loves and longings. Each act focuses on a different couple: the first happily planning their wedding, the second long-married and unhappy, the third about to marry but full of doubts. Writing with power and understanding about a love that survives the grave, a love that has withered and died, a love budding out of complexes and insecurities, the Pope addresses such fundamental human concerns as: What does it mean to fall in love? When do we know that a love is real--and can it last? If it dies, how do we go on living--and loving again? There are no easy answers, and there is no happy ending--such is the nature of men and women, and such is the nature of love--but there is hope, if we only acknowledge our need and accept the risks of a deep and lasting commitment.

I Hope This Doesn't Find You by Ann Liang

Sadie Wen is perfect on paper: school captain, valedictorian, and a "pleasure to have in class." It’s not easy, but she has a trick to keep her model-student smile plastered on her face at all times: she channels all her frustrations into her email drafts. She'd never send them of course -- she'd rather die than hurt anyone's feelings -- but it's a relief to let loose on her power-hungry English teacher or a freeloading classmate taking credit for Sadie's work.

All her most vehemently worded emails are directed at her infuriating cocaptain, Julius Gong, whose arrogance and competitive streak have irked Sadie since they were kids. "You're attention starved and self-obsessed and unbearably vain . . . I really hope your comb breaks and you run out of whatever expensive hair products you've been using to make your hair appear deceptively soft . . .

The Summer I Saved the World . . . in 65 Days by Michele Weber Hurwitz

It's summertime, and thirteen-year-old Nina Ross is feeling kind of lost. Her beloved grandma died last year; her parents work all the time; her brother's busy; and her best friend is into clothes, makeup, and boys. While Nina doesn't know what "her thing" is yet, it's definitely not shopping and makeup. And it's not boys, either. Though . . . has Eli, the boy next door, always been so cute? This summer, Nina decides to change things. She hatches a plan. There are sixty-five days of summer. Every day, she'll anonymously do one small but remarkable good thing for someone in her neighborhood, and find out: does doing good actually make a difference? Along the way, she discovers that her neighborhood, and her family, are full of surprises and secrets. In this bighearted, sweetly romantic novel, things may not turn out exactly as Nina expects. They might be better.

FAQS

BELOW are answers to some common questions

  • What kinds of books are on the list and how do I choose a book?

There are over 40 books on the summer reading list from a variety of genres. Each book was recommended by a faculty member. In each of the drop-down menus above, you will see the title of a book, the author, the book cover, a brief description, and a link to the book on Amazon. Parents should be a part of the book selection process so that all family members are comfortable and excited about the chosen title. Also, a student may not select a book she has read in a previous year.

  • How do students sign up for their books?

    • Each student will use this SignUpGenius link to select her chosen book.
    • Students must sign up using their school email addresses.
    • The sign-up will "go live" at 4 PM on Monday, April 28.
    • The deadline to select a book is 11:59 PM on Thursday, May 1.
    • Each book will be limited to the first 12 students who select that title. Once the maximum number is reached, that book will no longer be available, and students will have to choose from the remaining books.
    • If a student does not select a book by the deadline date and time, a book will be assigned to her by the Summer Reading Committee.

  • Will students be required to read any additional books over the summer for their English classes?

    • Honors and AP students in English III - English V will have additional required reading to prepare them for these more rigorous courses. More information will come from those teachers in May.
  • What about incoming 8th graders?

What about incoming 8th graders and transfer students?

Incoming 8th Graders – All incoming 8th graders will read The Summer I Saved the World. . .in 65 Days by Michele Weber Hurwitz. Students may purchase this book from any vendor. • Why are some books restricted to certain grade levels?

Most books on the list are suitable for all grade levels, but a few are restricted to certain age groups due to the topics discussed or the reading level required. If a book is restricted to a certain age group, the grade levels listed refer to the level a student will be in next school year.  For example, if a student will be in 9th grade next year, she may not select a book that is restricted to 11th and 12th graders.

  • What if a student is absent on the day of the book discussion?

All absent students will be contacted by a member of the Summer Reading Committee with information regarding a make-up assignment.

  • What if a student does not participate meaningfully in the group discussion?

These students will be required to complete an alternate assignment. The details of this assignment will be communicated to the student either by a member of the administration or a member of the Summer Reading Committee.
