Starting tomorrow, the Genesian players are putting on their production of Rock of Ages: Teen Edition at the Genesian Theater on October 22, 23, 24, 29, and 30. The original show ran on Broadway from 2009 to 2015.
This marks the Genesians’ first time ever putting on this musical. The story follows aspiring singer Sherrie Christian and her romance with Drew Boley, as well as the failing Bourbon Room as evil Germans try to shut it down. It is a story of love, hope, and rock n’ roll.
“This is a campy, comical look at the life of rock n’ roll in the 80s,” as described by John Giardina, the director of the show. The main characters are played by Logan Cobert playing Lonny Barnett, Jackson Boyce playing Drew Boley, Grace Tuck as Dennis Dupree, and Audrina Palmeira-Paz as Sherrie Christian.
The Genesians started rehearsals back in August and have been working hard almost every day since. According to Mr. Giardina, rehearsals have been “at times chaotic but always fun.” As for the show’s highlights, Mr. Giardina said that “‘Dead or Alive ’ and ‘I Can’t Fight This Feeling’" - performed during the emotional climax of the show - "are sure to be memorable”. Some of the standout performers he has recommended to look out for are Grace Tuck, Emily Fox, and Abel Braggs.
Veteran Genesian Christian Blanke, who plays Ja’Kieth Gill, a sneaky music producer, said, “I cannot wait to put on the show. I really think it is one of Genesians' better shows in recent years. I can’t wait for all of my friends to see me on stage. I’m really going to miss getting to see all of these people after school.”
The Genesian production of Rock of Ages will feature a live band made up of two students: Chapelle junior Rachel Tuck, who will be playing the electric guitar, and Rummel eighth grader Carson Rodrigue, who will be playing the bass. Carson remarked, “I love playing the bass, and I'm very excited to perform in the show. This is my first Genesians production, and I am so happy I signed up because of all of the friends I have made.”
The set was designed in collaboration between Chapelle Junior Christina Pierce and assistant directors Mrs. Lacour and Mr. Giardina.
For the past few Genesian show runs, there have been three shows. However, following their success, Mr. Giardina decided to have five. “To find a spot on the school calendar is notoriously difficult. We fortunately were able to find five nights to perform.”
The whole process has really seemed to grow the Genesian family closer. “I have had a great time,” said junior Blaise Bairnsfather. “It just feels like such a gift to be here with my friends every day after school. I am so grateful to Rummel for giving me this opportunity to put on such an amazing production. If I could go back to August and relive every rehearsal again, I would. Auditions for the spring show can't come soon enough.”
