Outstanding Catholic
Student Award
During the Deus Providebit Liturgy, the 2006-2007 Outstanding Catholic Student Awards were presented by President Jane Ann Frosch (ACHS Class of 1974). The awards are presented annually to one student in each grade level who demonstrates moral and ethical behavior based on Christ’s teachings, character and attitude which reflects Catholic principles, concern for the Chapelle community and daily life, and involvement in her church parish as well as service to the broader community.
The 11th grade Outstanding Catholic Student, Allison Jones was nominated by a classmate who shared: “This person is an awesome friend who encourages others to grow in the Catholic faith and open their eyes to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She never fails at influencing people with her positive attitude and she is comfortable with showing us that she is faith-filled.”
Another classmate indicated: Whenever I’m around her, I just want to be a better person. The basic joy she expresses is truly contagious. She has the gift of treating others lovingly and compassionately.
When asked, “What does it mean to you to be a Catholic?” This student replied: “Being a Catholic means devoting my life to God. I try to honor Him in everything I say and do. The graces I receive through the sacraments of the Catholic faith help me to remain close to God.”
She declares that her faith development began at an early age in her home, that her faith increased in grammar school, and that Chapelle expanded her knowledge of Catholicism in the classroom, exposed her to challenging life lessons, and ultimately intensified the dimensions of her faith.
She is involved in CYO, the Teen Choir at her church, and is the Teen Cross representative for her parish. At Chapelle she holds membership on Retreat Team, Matthew 25, Ambassadors, MAO, Chorale, the Swim Team, Cheerleading and CCRNO.
The 10th grade Outstanding Catholic Student, Molly St. Romain was nominated by a classmate who felt that this sophomore was deserving of the award because:
she is someone who lives life to the fullest as a follower of Jesus Christ, she has a special way of helping others realize how thankful we should be for each day God gives us, and because she claims prayer as a very important part of her life
When asked to “Describe her relationship with God” this student admitted that “in her opinion, it is very healthy. She not only thinks of God as our heavenly Father, but also as her best friend. Experientially, she admits to learning that anything can happen through prayer – such things as everyday miracles, physical healings, and special visits from friends.”
Molly holds membership in the French Club, Mu Alpha Theta, Ambassadors, Matthew 25, and the Archbishop Rummel Raider Band. As an Ambassador she works the Chapelle Summer Camp. In her church parish she is active in CYO and as a youth music minister. She helped coordinate the playing of Praise and Worship music at the assisted living center adjacent to her Church.
The 9th grade Outstanding Catholic Student, Elizabeth Owers’s nominations indicated that she is an all around wonderful Catholic Student who exhibits exceptional moral virtues and deep faith. Many of her peers claimed that she is most willing to help them with homework and with daily life issues.
When asked to explain what it means to be “Catholic” this student recipient responded: that it means praying sincerely, loving wholeheartedly, treating others as God’s beloved children, and living as Jesus did.
On campus, Elizabeth attends Tuesday morning Communion Services, participates in Chapelle liturgies, and belongs to Retreat Team, Matthew 25, Beta Club, Ambassadors, Student Council, and the Chapellette Dance Team. Community wide she is an altar server, a volunteer at the East Jefferson Wellness Center, a volunteer at Children’s Hospital, and a participant in the Pro Life Youth Fest.
Deus Providebit is evident in her life through the gifts of her Catholic faith, a loving, supportive family, good friends, and a Chapelle education. She appreciates that Chapelle has instilled in the student body not only academic knowledge but also Christian moral teachings and values that are needed to succeed in life. She credits learning from example as well as from books on this campus and commends the teachers and administrators for being excellent role models who genuinely care and display what it truly means to be Christian.
The 8th grade Outstanding Catholic Student, Melanie Sittig was recognized last May, at the 8th Grade Promotion Liturgy. Melanie was nominated for this award by several of her classmates because when she joined the Chapelle family as an incoming 8th grader, she was proud to live her Catholic faith and encourage others to live lives of virtue and goodness.
A faculty member had this to say when nominating her: “She always has a smile on her face; she responds well to others and particularly recognizes those who are in need of a helping hand. She is curious about life and excited to learn. She eagerly shares and steadfastly defends her Catholic faith.”
The Senior Outstanding Catholic Student Award was presented to Erin Hulin and Sarah Denney at the Baccalaureate Mass in May, 2007. They were nominated by their peers and by faculty members as a result of their fine Catholic example on our campus, in their church parishes, and throughout the metropolitan area.
